Lone Star Pet Supply names new president

Lone Star Pet Supply Inc. has promoted a new president and chief operating officer of the pet food distribution company.

Danny Selman’s promotion is effective Monday, Jan. 4. Selman first joined Lone Star in December 2000. He was promoted to director of sales in 2003. He became vice president and general manager in 2007. In his new role, he’ll manage all aspects of the company’s operations in Schertz.

“Danny has done a great job leading the company over the past several years,” says Chairman and CEO Dennis W. Stahl. “His role has evolved into increasing areas of responsibility. He’s done an outstanding job of improving operating efficiencies and has grown the business. He was instrumental in re-positioning our pet food business; and has developed some exciting new business opportunities.”

Lone Star is a privately owned regional pet food and pet supply distribution company. Founded in Schertz in 1952, the company stocks 19,000 items and ships products to stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Kansas. Lone Star also owns House of Pet Supplies, a national specialty distributor to boutique pet specialty stores.

Share Holiday with Needy Pets

Animal lovers can share the holiday spirit with homeless dogs and cats in local animal shelters this month by donating food, toys and treats through Best Friends Pet Care’s ninth annual Angel Tree campaign in Oklahoma City.

“The holiday season this year is going to be especially difficult for animal shelters,” explains Best Friends manager Breanna Ray. “Donations of food and funds are down because of the economy and, to make matters worse, many families have been forced to give up their pets. Our local shelters are desperately in need of donations.”

Best Friends will be collecting donations of pet supplies for the homeless pets at local animal shelters, including the Edmond Animal Shelter, through its Angel Tree program. From now through the end of December, animal lovers can stop in to choose a paper stocking from the Angel Tree in the lobby. Each stocking lists information about a pet in need of a new home, along with details of the food or supplies needed by the shelter. Since each shelter has specific needs, donors are asked to shop from the list on the pet’s card.

To raise additional funds for the program, Best Friends is hosting a bake sale from Dec. 21-28.

The Angel Tree Program began in 2000 and is underway at all Best Friends boarding kennels around the U.S. Last year, the program provided food, toys, treats and pet care products to more than 80 shelters and rescue groups.

A strange new pet carrier has become available - the fish carrier

The fish carrier is a portable fish tank that allows you to transport your fish around.

A seemingly pointless invention, I doubt that the fish would really appreciate being taken for a walk in a pet carrier and if you want to transport it you could just stick it in a pint glass.

Pet Stores: Immune to the Recession?

This last week has seen the opening of yet another pet business, in the form of a pet store in small town Wildridings.

Lisa Dulai, 43, cut the red ribbon of her new store "All Paws", having found that the nearest pet store for the town is a 4 mile drive away.

All of this begs the question, is the pet business one of the best for surviving the recession? We have seen the closure of some of the country's major brands and businesses and are losing on an average 12 small businesses a day in the UK, yet pet businesses seem strangely impervious to the difficulties of the current economic climate.
